November Fishing Report 2025 | Patch Reef & Mutton Snapper Fishing

November marks the start of one of the most exciting transitions of the year for Florida Keys fishing. As winter approaches and water temperatures cool, baitfish move into shallower water, creating excellent opportunities for patch reef fishing. When conditions are right, November can deliver some of the best reef fishing of the year.

Patch Reef Fishing in November

With the increase in bait, anglers can expect strong action from a variety of reef fish species, making for productive mixed-bag reef fishing trips. One of the top targets this time of year is the mutton snapper. Known for being smart and cautious, mutton snapper are a favorite among anglers and a prized catch on any fishing charter.

Mutton Snapper Fishing Tips

When it comes to mutton snapper fishing, lighter tackle is often the key to success. Fishing too heavy can lead to fewer bites, especially in clear winter water. I typically fish a 20-pound mono spinning outfit, tied with a Bimini twist to a 20–25 lb fluorocarbon leader, which offers a natural presentation while maintaining strength.

For terminal tackle, I prefer a light 1–2 oz knocker rig with a J-hook or a jig head in the same weight range. Current will always dictate your setup, so it’s important to use the lightest weight possible to keep your bait moving naturally—an important factor when targeting pressured reef fish.

Best Rigs for Patch Reef Fishing

Knocker rigs are especially effective for patch reef fishing, where rocky bottom and coral heads increase the chances of snagging. The free-sliding sinker often allows anglers to work the rig loose by tightening the line and bouncing the rod tip—saving both time and tackle.

Another proven setup for mutton snapper fishing is the fish finder rig. This rig features a sliding sinker on the main line, followed by a barrel swivel and a fluorocarbon leader. I typically start with a leader length of about one wingspan and adjust based on conditions.

When using a fish finder rig, it’s best to cast to the side of the patch reef instead of dropping straight down. Larger mutton snapper often patrol the edges and perimeter of reef structure, making this an effective presentation for targeting bigger fish.

November Fishing in the Florida Keys

November offers anglers a prime opportunity to experience some of the most consistent reef fishing in the Florida Keys. With the right conditions, light tackle, and attention to detail, November patch reef fishing can produce outstanding results and memorable days on the water.
